Students Teaching Students:

The scientists who responded to the open-ended questions on our survey provided us with a tremendous amount of information about astronomy. I wanted several students to bring this information into my classroom and teach my other students. I selected 5 students for this job.

The students I selected were highly motivated and all showed an interest in astronomy, something I wanted to further progress. The students were given the following tasks to complete:

. Task 1: Student teachers had to read all of the open-ended questions and responses from the survey and select three that they would like to teach. I then sat down with these students and we discussed their top choices. We collectivley narrowed it down to the responses of one question that each would teach.
Task 2: Students had to design their own grading rubric. I discussed with them the goals I envisioned but I wanted them to determine their own criteria by which I would grade them. After each student determined how they wanted to be graded, they each submitted their indiviualized rubric and I either approved it or sent it back for changes. You can view an example of one student teacher rubric.
Task 3:

Student teachers selected their favorite response to their question. They then *e-mailed follow-up questions to the scientist who gave that original answer. I wanted to try to further involve students with scientists, but on a much more personal scale. You can view the students' questions and the responses they received.

*Students were given epals.com e-mail accounts for this part of the project.*

Task 4: Design and construct a poster board that will serve as a teaching aid.
Task 5: Submit two multiple choice questions related to the information they plan to teach. I then compiled the questions into a quiz that was eventually given to the student audience after the presentations.

Task 6: Present the information they learned to each of my four classes.

Task 7: Individually conference with me to reflect on the experience and determine a project grade.
