Along with quizzes, labs, and various GEMS activities; I used the project below as a formal assessment of our astronomy unit. The "Are We Alone?" project helped students comprehend certain components that were vital to this project.

Planetary System Project

You are from another planet in another galaxy. It is imperative, for some reason, that others learn of your existence. Your team must provide a collection of information that will explain the basic components of your planet, planetary system and galaxy. Principals we learned in class should provide the base for all imaginative endeavors. Have fun with this project!

Model of Planetary System
You are to make a 3D model of the planetary system your planet belongs/belonged to. The model should include your star(s) and the planets and other objects that orbit the star(s). The color of your star(s) should represent star temperature. Within the model you must somehow show the orbit of the planets and label the objects that form the planetary system.

Diagram of Galaxy
You must make a diagram of your galaxy. This diagram must represent a true galaxy type. You must indicate the location within the galaxy your star is located and the size of your galaxy.

Information Booklet
You are to form a booklet that contains the three writing components and the binary message. The booklet should have a cover, be neat and be organized; throwing papers in a folder will not work. Below are the pieces that will form the booklet.

  • Planetary System History/Characteristics
This first paper will concentrate on the formation of your home star(s) and planets. Describe how this planetary system came into existence and give general descriptions of some of the characteristics of the major objects within the system. Include the type of star(s), star temperature, the age of the star(s) and what will ultimately happen to the star(s) and planets. Illustrations will help support your writing. The typing of this writing piece is required.
  • Planet Ecology
This writing piece should focus on the living organisms of your planet. You first need to explain why life exists on your planet. Does your planet meet the Goldilocks conditions? Is your planet in the star's life zone or are there other special conditions that allow for life? You then need to describe some of the general ecosystems of your planet and the organisms, especially you, that live within those ecosystems. Illustrations of several organisms (at least 2) are expected. The typing of this writing piece is required.
  • Technology
The last writing component involves the technological advances of your species. Discuss how your species moves around your planet, how they communicate with each other, what they live in, and how they travel through space. Illustrations will help support your writing. The typing of this writing piece is required.
  • Binary Message
Your species has the technology to transmit radio messages and has transmitted several messages into space. What did they say? You are to create a binary message that simulates one sent out by your species. You will be given graph paper to draw your message but you will have to write an explanation of the message. Your message should include important information about your species, planet, star, planetary system, or galaxy. If you include the binary code (the beeps and clicks) your team will earn an extra 5 points.

Extra Credit
Create your own additional component to this project and you can earn up to 20 extra points. Your additional component must be different than any other additional component selected by any other team. Mr. Battagliese must also approve the additional component before you begin work on it. Use your imagination because there are endless possibilities.
