The
focus of this project was astronomy and it was targeted at astronomers. The
focus and target can easily be changed but the general procedure remains relatively
the same. Listed below is the procedure I followed for this project.
Project Procedure
- Develop project objectives and identify your target audience.
- Introduce the project to students and generate student interest/enthusiasm.
- Students research the target audience and comprise a list of email addresses.
I had students go to Yahoo and type "astronomy departments". Each
student was then assigned one university to research.
- Develop survey. I used one period to create survey questions in each
of my science classes. The questionnaire took several weeks to develop. To
create the questionnaire, I asked students to record questions in their notebooks
during our astronomy unit. On a daily basis, a student from each class wrote
a question on the board so others can see. I recorded these questions and
selected twelve.
- Design the web site.
- Students respond to their own survey. I had students take the survey
so we could compare data between students and scientists.
- Create a mailing list with the addresses of your target audience.
- Compose and send email letter to scientists.
- Disseminate survey results to students.
- Students translate the results into percentages and graph the percentages.
See graph activity.
- Analyze survey results. Compare and contrast scientist and student survey
results. Draw conclusions from survey results.
- Copy and paste questionnaire responses to HTML pages and upload pages.
- Share questionnaire responses with students. We used our computer lab
so each student could view the responses at their own pace. Students worked
on the conclusion questions after reading through
the responses to all questions.
- Discuss responses in class and link responses to objectives of the Planetary
System Project.
- Send an email to thank participating scientists and invite them to view
the results
