HERBIVORES: Nature's Vegitarians

In the rain forest, herbivores play a very important role. Herbivores eat all sorts of plants. If herbivores became extinct than the rainforest would be over populated by flower life. Also, if herbivores became extinct the carnivores would die of hunger because all of their food had died.

Name: Humming Bird
Description: Hummingbirds range in length from 5.7 cm to 21.5 cm. They are the smallest birds in the world. Long tongue to get nectar. Hummingbirds are not afraid to attack eagles or hawks. They have the ability to fly forwards and backwards.
Habitat: Rainforest, South America, North America. Warm and near flowers.
Diet: Flowers, honeysuckle, sap, and nectar.
Predators: Some hawks, other birds of prey and snakes

Name: Galapagos Islands turtles
Description: They can weigh up to 600 pounds and it is believed that some can live up to 200 years. Their eggs incubate for 4-8 months. Their sence of smell is excellant.
Habitat: Galapagos Islands, living in lush rainforest.
Diet: Plant, leaves, grass, and fruit.
Predators: Humans and the animals they have introduced to the islands. Dogs, pigs, and black rats. Goats and donkeys eat much of the vegetation that the Galapgos tortoise needs. Also hawks who prey on young tortoises.

Name: Amazon Morpho Butterfly
Description: The life span of a butterfly is short, from a few days to about 8 months. Scientists belive that their wings act like a solar heater.
Habitat: Tropical Rainforests. Central and South America.
Diet: Flowers, leaves, and rotting dead logs. Sap and juices.
Predators: Birds, fish if near water, large insects, humans
